Ian Tuttle captured fueling up with Campbell's soup before he takes off from Time Station 3 in Furnace Creek. He was in good form, anxious to attack the climbs that would lead him out of Death Valley and its high winds. The headwinds faced by the riders were particularly strong, estimated at 40–50 mph along the valley floor. Thrush recorded a high speed of 57 mph on the descent from Townes Pass.
