1987: Five years ahead of the "schedule" I'd made for myself as a 15 year old meeting Lon Haldeman in 1982, I competed in the race at age 20 in 1987. I placed 9th overall out of 33 entrants, covering the 3,127 miles from San Francisco to Washington, DC in 10 days, 23 hours, and 58 minutes. Amazingly, I am still the race's youngest ever finisher. This was, and still is, the longest and toughest RAAM course ever. It began at the Golden Gate Bridge and finished at the foot of Washington Monument. John Marino, the Founder and Race Director, showed a brilliant vision for this race in developing this dramatic route! The funny thing is, I never got a shirt from 1987, so my long time friend Pat Enright (the most sought-after crew person in the world of RAAM and the 508 who first crewed on my crew in 1988) gave it to me for this quilt project.
