Shadow Dancing

As the race clock ticks toward the 24-hour mark, a mixture of physical, mental, and emotional fatigue begins to play a huge role in condition of athletes engaged in this ultramarathon race. Support vehicles following their riders in the dark hours of the event light the way for the cyclists. Sometimes, the light plays tricks as shadows dance on canyon walls. Sagebrush comes to life. Rocks become animals, people, and sometimes giant bowls of breakfast cereal. Jesus, Ghandi, and Elvis make their obligatory appearances. Skyscrapers are magically transported to the desert floor. Inner fears rise to the surface and are dealt with in one way or another.

Hallucinations are part of the game. They're one of the special components that comprise ultracycling races. Love them or hate them, they're here to stay.
