Chris Kostman's 508/RAAM Quilt, made by Shelby Kostman

1983: Under its new name and with its first qualifier, the John Marino Open, held that May, Race Across America grew from four to twelve racers in its second year. Lon Haldeman, the winner of the race in 1982 and 1983 (and the current Race Director) gave me this shirt when I hung out with him that Summer just before the race. He and his crew were staying in my home town of Glendora, CA, with mutual friends named Wayne and Josie Hysen. I went to the start of the race that year in Santa Monica with my best friend Doug and with my brother Keith. We watched the start and drove along watching them for about the first 100 miles. It was a fateful, inspirational day for me.
